WEC Group Welcomes New Apprentices

WEC Group is proud to welcome three new groups of apprentices who have officially begun their training across the WEC Engineering Academy, MTL Advanced in Rotherham, and HTA in Coventry this month. The latest intake will be embarking on specialist apprenticeships in welding and fabrication, CNC machining, and laser and press brake operation. These disciplines that form the backbone of the Group’s world-class operations.

Founded in 2006, the WEC Engineering Academy remains one of the only apprenticeship schemes of its kind in the UK. Over the past two decades, it has established a reputation for equipping young people with the practical skills and technical knowledge they need to thrive in the engineering sector. Based in Blackburn, Lancashire, the Academy continues to play a vital role in nurturing talent not only for WEC Group, but also for the wider industry.

The four-year apprenticeship programmes on offer provide individuals in Lancashire, South Yorkshire, Coventry and the surrounding regions with the chance to gain hands-on experience while earning nationally recognised qualifications. Apprentices are supported by experienced mentors and industry-leading facilities, ensuring they develop both the theoretical and practical expertise required for long-term careers.

A distinguishing feature of the Academy is its status as one of only a handful of TWI (The Welding Institute) certified welder training centres in the North West. This accreditation demonstrates the Group’s commitment to training apprentices to the highest international standards. In addition, the Academy’s Training and Development Manager, Kris Mercer, is a CSWIP-certified welder instructor and examiner, which guarantees that the quality of training remains second to none.

The Group’s dedication to skills development has also been recognised on a national stage. Kris Mercer has been shortlisted for Skills Champion of the Year at the 2025 National Apprenticeship and Skills Awards. This is a reflection of his outstanding contribution to promoting engineering careers and supporting the next generation of welders and fabricators.

By investing in apprenticeships across multiple locations, WEC Group is ensuring that vital engineering skills are being developed within the local workforce. This year’s apprentices will play an important role in strengthening the company’s future, while also gaining the tools to build rewarding and sustainable careers.

With engineering at the heart of UK industry, WEC Group is delighted to continue its proud tradition of training the engineers of tomorrow.
