WEC Group aim to Inspire Young Engineers at National Festival of Making 2017

WEC Group will be showcasing its award-winning apprenticeship scheme at Blackburn's first National Festival of Making as it aims to inspire young engineers.

The two day festival, held on 6 and 7 May 2017, will take over Blackburn town centre with music, markets, street food, art, performance, tours, talks and an eclectic mix of making experiences for everyone.

During the event, we will be giving members of the public the chance to weld with a Lincoln Electric MIG welding simulator. Kris Mercer, Training & Development Manager and and CSWIP Master Welding Instructor, said: "The simulator is designed to introduce people to skilled welding, and it's a great way for them get hands on and to explore a career in the trade."

"I will also be delivering welding demonstrations at the event to show people what the skill entails, and to build an interest in welding among the public."

WEC Group Training Academy apprentices have also recently been working on a research space rocket which will be on display during the event if the weather is fair. Apprentices fabricated the 8.3 metre rocket propulsion system and fitted the rocket's fin brackets, which were cut at the company's in-house waterjet division in Blackburn.

The Starchaser Industries rocket is set to launch later this year as a way of engaging young people and inspiring them to pursue science technology, engineering and mathematics as part of their education.

WEC Group have a stand in the Hive Ambassadors Network pop up shop on King William Street, Blackburn from now until the event, with brochures and apprenticeship application forms available to take away as part of its recruitment drive.

The Group are now recruiting CNC Machining, Technical Production Engineering and Welding/Fabrication apprentices to start in September 2017, with interviews taking place in May and June.

If you would like to apply for an apprenticeship, please download an application form and return it to one of our reception's as soon as possible, or alternatively you can visit the pop up shop in Blackburn where they are available to take.
