Apprentices Unveil Stunning Horse Sculpture
We are proud to reveal this stunning horse sculpture created by apprentices at our Engineering Academies in Blackburn and Rotherham, showcasing the skill and dedication of its next generation of engineers.
The sculpture, named 'Doublet', was designed and manufactured entirely in-house. From initial laser cutting through to welding and polishing, every stage was completed by a team of apprentices. Over three weeks, the team of four who worked on the horse each contributed 96 hours to the project, totalling 384 hours of hands-on work.
The piece was created to mark the visit of HRH The Princess Royal to MTL Advanced in Rotherham, where one of WEC Group’s apprentice academies is based. The name 'Doublet' was chosen in tribute to HRH The Princess Royal’s own horse, with the sculpture inspired by her lifelong connection to equestrian sport. 'Doublet' was formally presented to HRH The Princess Royal during her visit, alongside a commemorative plaque.
The finished piece highlights both the technical ability and creativity of the apprentices involved. It also demonstrates the real-world experience gained through our training programmes, where learners are encouraged to take on meaningful projects from start to finish.
Projects like this play an important role in developing practical skills and confidence, giving apprentices the opportunity to apply their training in a live environment. This is another example of how our Engineering Academies continue to deliver high-quality, industry-focused training.
