Celebrating International Womens Day 2026
For International Women’s Day, we have been celebrating the women who make a lasting impact across WEC Group. As part of this, we spoke to Leah, whose apprenticeship journey and progression into sales has been truly inspiring. You can read her story below in her own words.
Alongside this, we have been inviting colleagues from across WEC Group to submit appreciation messages recognising the women they work with every day. These messages are being shared across our social media channels to highlight the talent, commitment and influence of women throughout WEC Group in the lead up to International Women's Day.
Leah, Sales Executive, WEC Group
What apprenticeship did you complete?
I completed a Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship and I am currently in my second year of a four year Chartered Management Degree Apprenticeship at Manchester Metropolitan University.
What skills did you develop the most during your apprenticeship?
The three main skills I developed were time management for myself, communication with stakeholders and confidence within a team, especially being able to speak out and share my ideas.
What was the biggest challenge you faced, and how did you overcome it?
Learning the ropes of sales was the biggest challenge. My manager Derek has been so supportive in my growth and has taught me valuable knowledge. I learn every day and always have the help I need.
Is there a project or moment you felt particularly proud of?
I felt extremely proud when I achieved the Business Innovation Award in 2025 at the WEC Apprentice Awards for my commitment to implementing a quote and report system into the business. I completed this during my Level 3 Business Administration Apprenticeship.
How has your confidence grown since joining WEC Group?
My confidence has grown in ways I did not know it could. I have gained confidence in helping others with my knowledge and becoming a better communicator.
What does it mean to you to be a woman in the engineering industry?
It means a lot to me because it is predominantly a male based industry. It makes you feel proud because every day you are showing how important it is for women to emerge into these sectors and not to be scared.
Have you had any female role models or mentors at WEC Group?
Tamara. She always goes above and beyond for everyone. She is a great laugh and a person I really enjoy working with.
What would you say to other women considering an engineering apprenticeship?
Do not be scared. If you try your best and never give up, you can work your way up and build your knowledge. It is the effort and attention that matter most.
What do you like most about working for WEC Group?
The people. The team are great and always there to help when needed. We have a strong relationship across the office, which creates a positive atmosphere. That can turn a hard day into a good one.
As we mark International Women’s Day, Leah’s journey reflects the opportunities available within WEC Group and the importance of continuing to support and champion women across the engineering industry.
