Royal Mail Post Box Made by WEC Group Connects Staff at Rothera Research Station

We are proud to share that a post box fabricated by WEC Group in Darwen has reached one of the most remote locations on Earth and recently featured in the national news.

As part of our long-standing Royal Mail contract, our teams manufacture the iconic red post boxes that are seen across the UK and beyond. One of these boxes has now been delivered to the British Antarctic Survey’s Rothera Research Station, helping staff working in extreme conditions stay connected with friends and family back home.

The new lamp box was requested by Kirsten Shaw, a station support assistant who runs the staff-only Post Office at Rothera. The service plays a vital role for those deployed to Antarctica, offering a tangible link to home through letters and parcels in an environment where isolation can be challenging. Kirsten oversees not only the formal logistics of mail entering and leaving Antarctica, but also the complex task of distributing post to other UK research stations and field camps, a process affectionately known as Antarctic Postal Logistics.

Seeking to replace a hand-made post box, Kirsten wrote to His Majesty The King. Touched by the story of the team working in one of the most remote places on the planet, the Royal Household worked with Royal Mail to arrange this special delivery. Kirsten was previously awarded the Fuchs Medal in 2022 in recognition of her outstanding contribution to the Antarctic community, particularly her work supporting the staff postal service.

The journey to Antarctica is no small feat. Once sorted, post travels by ship aboard the RRS Sir David Attenborough or via BAS aircraft to the Falkland Islands, before continuing through the RAF air bridge to the UK and into the Royal Mail network. The new post box was delivered to Rothera by the RRS Sir David Attenborough, alongside the first major supply drop following the long Antarctic winter.

The box will take pride of place in Rothera’s new Discovery Building, a hub supporting scientific operations and polar research. For everyone at WEC Group, it is a powerful reminder that the products we manufacture locally can have a truly global impact, supporting communication, wellbeing, and connection even at the ends of the Earth.
